Olimar's Expedition Team
Stranded explorer who turned tiny plant creatures into his greatest allies for survival.
Olimar's Expedition Team refers to the crew of the SS Dolphin, stranded on the mysterious Planet PNF-404. Composed primarily of Captain Olimar, this group represents the first known human contact with the Pikmin species. Their journey is defined by a desperate need for survival and a unique partnership with tiny, plant-based creatures to overcome hostile alien wildlife. Originally dispatched from an unknown location aboard his ship, Olimar's role evolved into that of an explorer and commander. He relies on the loyalty of the Pikmin to gather resources needed to repair his vessel, establishing a legacy of inter-species cooperation.

Lore & Background
The team's history begins with a catastrophic crash landing that left Olimar isolated on an unknown world. Captain Olimar, driven by his duty to survive, quickly realized that the local flora were sentient enough to follow commands. This discovery shifted his mission from mere scavenging to strategic management of these new allies. During his search, Olimar bonds with a dog-like creature that he names Moss. After finding his ship's missing radio within the interior of the Hero's Hideaway, Olimar transmits an SOS call along with his voyage logs, but mysteriously disappears after continuing his search for the missing parts. The events of Olimar's crash serve as an alternate retelling of the events of Pikmin (2001). It is currently unknown where Pikmin 4 fits into the timeline of the other main series games.
In Their Own Story
Morning mist clung to the alien grass as Olimar checked his communicator, the static crackling with familiar urgency. Beside him, Moss sniffed the air, tail wagging. A chorus of chirps rose from the ground where dozens of Red, Blue, and Yellow Pikmin waited for orders. Olimar nodded slowly, pointing toward a distant cluster of treasure. The tiny warriors marched forward in unison, their small hands ready to lift heavy burdens. For the first time since the crash, hope felt as tangible as the dirt beneath their boots. But Olimar's time was limited: he had only 15 days before his life-support functions would fail.
Reader's Guide
Olimar's Expedition Team functions as a solo survival unit. Led by Captain Olimar, the crew consists primarily of himself and his companion Moss. Their primary objective is to collect the SS Dolphin's 30 missing ship parts. This side mode, called 'Olimar's Shipwreck Tale', is unlocked during the story of Pikmin 4. Leadership is centralized with Olimar, who issues commands to Pikmin. He coordinates Pikmin movements, assigning specific plant creatures to tasks based on their elemental resistances and physical strengths. The mode features only Red, Blue, and Yellow Pikmin, Moss instead of Oatchi as a companion, shorter days, no caves or Dandori Challenges/Battles, progress-based upgrades and items, and a time limit of 15 days before Olimar's life-support functions fail. Area layouts have been changed drastically to accommodate for the different gameplay, with new enemy placements, hazards removed/added, new traversal options, and some sections of an area being inaccessible.
