The Onions themselves are living organisms that require care and protection from local fauna. Over time, additional Onions can be planted near the main hub, expanding the capacity of the base and allowing for greater diversity in Pikmin types available to the explorers.

In Their Own Story

The sky turned a bruised purple as the final hour approached. Olimar scanned the perimeter, his eyes darting between the towering weeds and the retreating shadows. A red Pikmin lagged behind, carrying a heavy fruit just out of reach. 'Come on!' he whispered, waving his arms frantically. The Onion pulsed softly in the twilight, its petals beginning to close like a flower sleeping for winter. One by one, the tiny soldiers tumbled through the opening, safe until dawn.

Reader's Guide

The base is typically located near the initial landing site of the explorers' ship. This area is generally flat and open, designed to minimize immediate threats from large predators during setup. Hazards include nocturnal creatures that patrol the perimeter after dark. Pikmin must be recalled before nightfall, or they will vanish forever. The ground may contain seeds or food items that can be brought back for storage. Strategically, this location is vital for resource management. Explorers use the base to sort collected items and decide which Onions to prioritize. Protecting the Onion from enemies like Bulborbs is essential, as losing it halts Pikmin production entirely.
